The GSNC was incorporated in 2022 and is overseen by a 3-5 person volunteer board, plus 2 optional youth board members.
History
The GSNC began as the Gilman Square Neighborhood Association and was started in 2018 by a local representative of the Green Line Extension (GLX) Working Group that was formed to enable communication between the MBTA and the neighborhood during construction. In February 2022 the GSNC was incorporated as a nonprofit in Massachusetts, and in November 2022 it was awarded 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. Finally, in June 2023, the GSNC was recognized as an official neighborhood council by the City of Somerville, cementing our ability to negotiate community benefits agreements with developers.
The GSNC has always been lucky to have a number of neighbors with architecture, urban design, and civil engineering backgrounds and early on they contributed greatly to community brainstorming sessions hosted by the city. Informed by these sessions, the City began to draft a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Homans site, an anchor property in Gilman Square that they own. The RFP process was halted by Covid and since then the city has turned its focus to other projects. We hope to one day be able to return to developing the Homans site, especially as it seems to be the most viable way to obtain an accessible T stop.
